Ectopic Pregnancy

ID: exh44470a
This full color, five-part medical illustration shows a cut-away view of the normal course of an egg through the Fallopian tube and into the wall of the uterus, a developing embryo ectopically implanted in the right Fallopian tube, and the subsequent rupture and hemorrhage of the Fallopian tube. An ectopic pregnancy is one in which the fertilized egg is implanted in any tissue other than the uterine wall. Most occur in the Fallopian tube, but about 2% of ectopic pregnancies occur in the ovary, cervix, or abdomen. Causes of ectopic pregnancy include Fallopian cilial damage due to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or tubal surgery, high levels of estrogen or progesterone, and advancing age. Because ectopic pregnancy is treated with tubal surgery, a history of ectopic pregnancy increases the risk of future occurrences.
